| I've never really heard of that in gymnastics. Latest I've ever heard of like a level 9 and up is 8 years old. I started when I was 4, which is pretty typical for competitive gymnasts. There is a breaking point in gymnastics, where your body can't take it anymore. This usually happens in the late teens to early twenties. SOmetimes earlier. This is what happened with the chinese gymnasts in the 2008 Olympics. They obviously were younger than 16, but they were competing younger because they were at the height of their careers, any longer they would've went downhill. This happens because they actually started too young and got good too fast. It shortens your time as a gymnast when you mess up your body at such a young age. You can't start too late either though, because gymnastics kind of changes the way you develop. Most gymnasts are short. I'm really short. I didn't say one day, "Oh, I'm short, I should do gymnastics!" I was naturally small, but gymnastics made it worse. Now I'm 4'10'' for the rest of my life. It's easier to do gymnastics shorter. So, when you start earlier, it'll stunt your growth, so you'll be able to perform bigger skills. There are so many more factors to this, gymnastics is a really insane sport. |

| My husband and I disagree on this subject too. I don't swat the butt. I swat her hand. If she is getting into something she knows she's not supposed to touch, I give her a warning. If she's disregards the warning, I swat her hand. Not hard enough to bruise or welt the skin but hard enough to know I'm serious or to get my point across. I don't think there is anything wrong with a swat every once in a while. My daughter is 21 months and to some degree, KNOWS what is ok and not ok for her to play with. Starting early with the discipline will help your guy listen better to instruction. Once they get to an age where they can understand what a time-out is and when you can get down to their level and explain to them why it is they can't do something and they understand you, in my opinion, is when the swatting should stop. This is what my mother did with me and her other 4 guys and what my grandmother did with her 2. So in a way, you and your husband are both right. Different ages call for different techniques! | Give me an honest answer as to when or where did it start with young boys wearing their pants below the butt? I try to tell the male students I come in contact with it isn't appropriate to wear them in that way. I'm trying to prepare them for the adult working world. They feel it is okay. Some people have told me it started in the prisons and has a sexual meaning, while others say it began back in the '70's. So please, no jokes, insults, etc. Just an honest and complete answer. | well, there are a couple of different theories, but i think it was just a combination of the two. one, you've already mentioned... was to be like the prisoners who were not given belts and used it as a fashion statement to mock the guards. the second, was because jeans at the time were made for a white man's body (no butt), so they would buy the jeans many sizes too big and sag them. personally, i hate the look of sagging jeans... however, i do believe that high school is a time for guys to express themselves, and if it's not against the dress code then they should be able to wear whatever fits into the code. they have plenty of time to be grown up and conform to our image. when else will they be able to look like idiots? between sagging pants and the emo boys wearing makeup... they are just finding their identity, even tho it seems stupid and extreme sometimes. i think that forcing conformity on them can be detrimental to their independence as an adult. and yes, one could argue that following the crowd is just another way of conforming. but, in their minds they at least feel like an individual. i'm in the military and love it when we get in guys who grew up in private schools or any "cookie cutter" lifestyle. it makes my life super easy to train them. but honestly, the ones who turn out to be the best leaders are the ones that give me so much trouble in the beginning. with all their attitude and inability to follow the rules... i hate them! but, once they are finally ready, they are the ones with the innovative ideas and the ability to lead with confidence rather than micro-manage. wow, i really didn't mean post a novel. i got a little carried away. i'm sure most of this isn't what you wanted to read. sorry about that. |
